What is FiberHUSK?

FiberHUSK is a water soluble fibre product consisting of pulverized husks from the Indian plant Plantago ovata Forsk., also known as Ispaghula husk or Psyllium husk. The fibre product consists of water soluble hemicellulose, pectin, pentose and hexose.

FiberHUSK in ordinary baking

By adding FiberHUSK to your bread and pastry when baking, you achieve higher fibre content and the bread stays moist and fresh longer.
Bread with high fibre content gives you a sense of fullness, more so than ordinary white bread. Furthermore the dietary fibres further the digestion by keeping the intestinal content soft and pliable.
The folder "Baking with FiberHUSK" and “FiberHUSK - extra fibres when baking” contains recipies for ordinary baking with FiberHUSK.

FiberHUSK in gluten-free baking

FiberHUSK makes natural gluten-free bread moister, improves the rising of pastry made with naturally gluten-free flour and gives gluten-free bread a better texture, so it doesn't crumble so easily.
Often many types of gluten-free flour have lower fibre content than ordinary flour and it is therefore important to take extra care to get enough fibres in your diet.

In the folder "Baking gluten-free with FiberHUSK" you will find a selection of recipies for gluten-free baking.

Fibres and digestion

Fibres in your diet are essential for the well-being that comes from a stomach and intestine working without problems. Like an internal massage of the intestinal walls the fibres ensure that the strength and contractibility of the intestinal musculature is maintained, so that constipation and a slow working bowel can easier be avoided.

Like other plant fibres finely ground Psyllium husks are difficult to digest. Passing through stomach and intestines the husks absorb fluid and increase in bulk, whilst they at the same time release vegetable mucilage that increases the water content of the intestines. This way the intestinal content has a more suitable texture, which especially the large intestine process better.

Who benefits from FiberHUSK?

Both children and adults who wish to get enough fibres will benefit. However, children under 3 years of age should not have more than 15 gram fibres per day.

FiberHUSK contains no additives and is non-addictive. FiberHUSK can be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding, and it can be used by people suffering from gluten allergy (coeliac disease) i.e. who are allergic to wheat, rye, barley and oats.

Fibres are important

Adults should eat 25-35 gram fibres per day, but studies show that adult’s mean intake of fibres is just 20 gram per day. FiberHUSK can help raise the daily intake of fibres by increasing the fibre content in bread and your daily meals.

To diabetics it is also important to eat a healthy and varied diet with fibres in large quantities. This is why white bread is normally advised against. However, if you add enough natural dietary fibres, even sandwich bread can be recommended. With FiberHUSK it is possible to bake white bread that in terms of fibres is just as good as wholegrain rye bread.

The folder “FiberHUSK - extra fibres when baking” contains recipes that are also suitable for diabetics, as the fat, sugar and fibre content has been taken into account.
